PHOENIX 4, DETROIT 4

Marty Lapointe, who has been in a year-long slump, scored a power-play goal with about 10 minutes remaining as the Red Wings overcame the loss of captain Steve Yzerman and rallied for a 4-4 tie with the Phoenix Coyotes. Lapointe took a pass from Slava Fetisov, broke in alone on goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin and fired a wrist shot to the top right corner for his ninth goal of the season and first in a month.

Yzerman left at 5:39 of the second period after being clipped in the left knee by Phoenix's Rick Tocchet. "The player who does it is going to say they didn't mean to hurt him, but when you stick out a knee, he knows a knee on knee is going to cause injury," Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman said. Tocchet received a five-minute kneeing major.

Tocchet also received a tripping minor with two seconds to play in overtime when he used his knee to upend Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom. What is the deal Rick?

Vyacheslav Kozlov had a goal and an assist and Chris Osgood made 20 saves in the tie. Brent Gilchrist scored 73 seconds into the second period with his 10th goal, matching his output from all of last season as a Dallas Star. Brendan Shanahan took a pass from Lidstrom and beat Khabibulin for his 22nd goal. The Wings had 32 shots on net in the effort.

PITTSBURGH 4, DETROIT 2

Veteran Tom Barrasso made 51 saves as the Pittsburgh Penguins came up with a 4-2 win over the Red Wings. He got shelled but came up big in the win. The Penguins killed off all seven Red Wing power plays. Marty Lapointe and Aaron Ward scored third period goals for the Red Wings, who played without captain Steve Yzerman, who was scheduled to miss two games with a sprained left medial collateral ligament and a charley horse after being kneed by Phoenix's Rick Tocchet Wednesday.

The Wings are 1-3-1 in their last five games and were held under three goals for the fourth time in that span. A goal drought for sure for the league's number one rated offense. They also are winless in their last five road contests, going 0-3-2. In the second period the Red Wings had a goal by Larry Murphy disallowed when right wing Mathieu Dandenault was called for goaltender interference with about eight minutes left. "It was a penalty on Dandenault, not a hot goalie," said Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman about the turning point in the game. "It was a two-goal swing. That's the game, Murphy scored a goal and we got a penalty. Our goal was no good, they got a power play, that was the game, a two-goal swing."

DETROIT 4, WASHINGTON 2

Aaron Ward and Brendan Shanahan scored 64 seconds apart in a three-goal third period as the Red Wings came back for a 4-2 victory over the Washington Capitals. Brent Gilchrist added a power-play goal in the third period to ensure the win. The Wings broke a five-game road winless streak, winning for just the second time in their last six overall. The Red Wings extended their unbeaten streak against Washington to seven games (6-0-1) since Jan. 30, 1994.

"We got ourselves in a position to win," Gilchrist said. "That's the kind of period we need. We need to make sure there's no panic in our game. We were trying not to get frustrated. We've been playing right on the edge, where it can go either way."

Kevin Hodson finished with 23 saves, improving to 5-1-2 in his last eight games. Detroit won for the first time in 14 games this season when trailing after two periods (1-9-4).

DETROIT 1, FLORIDA 1

Former Red Wing Dino Ciccarelli scored his 600th career goal, a power-play tally with five minutes remaining, as the Florida Panthers rallied for a 1-1 tie with the Red Wings. The tying goal came 49 seconds after Ciccarelli drew a holding penalty on Igor Larionov.

"It was not a pretty goal," Ciccarelli said. "I'm not sure who shot the puck. I was just standing where I knew I should stand and I swatted it in.

"It would've been nicer to score against Tampa, but it was OK to score against one of my former teams," added Ciccarelli, who downplayed his stormy relationship with Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman. "Scotty is a competitor. We had some go-ins, but even when Scotty and I were arguing he always put me on the ice at key times. He doesn't get along with a lot of his ex-players."

After the game, Ciccarelli received congratulations from former Red Wings teammate Vladimir Konstantinov, who is rehabilitating in South Florida from a serious head injury suffered in a June 13 limousine accident. "It was nice to see him," Ciccarelli said. "I've seen him a couple of times since the accident and I asked him if he wanted to come into our locker room. He got a smile on his face, then I wheeled him in. Everyone gave him a hand. I think we got along so well because we played a lot similar styles."

"He loves Dino," explained Konstantinov's wife, Irina. "He was aware of the (600th) goal and he purposely asked to go and congratulate him." How can you not love Dino? It's something I asked myself all of the time.

Defensemen Larry Murphy scored the only goal. Chris Osgood made 26 saves in the tie.

DETROIT 5, TAMPA BAY 4

Defenseman Aaron Ward scored the tie breaking goal nine minutes into the third period and Steve Yzerman returned from an injury with three points, as the wings won 5-4 over the struggling Tampa Bay Lightning.

Chris Osgood finished with 24 saves to secure the win. Winger Vyacheslav Kozlov had a pair of goals for the Red Wings, who are 5-0-1 in their last six meetings with the Lightning and lead the all-time series, 13-2-1.

Captain Steve Yzerman opened the scoring 99 seconds into the game with his 13th goal. He had missed the last three games due to his injured leg. Defenseman Anders Eriksson scored a power-play goal at 6:09 of the first period also. Kozzie's goals were his 17th and 18th of the season.

ST. LOUIS 4, DETROIT 1

Pierre Turgeon and Steve Duchesne scored 19 seconds apart in the second period to propel the St. Louis Blues to a 4-1 win over the Red Wings.

Al MacInnis blasted a power-play goal on a big slap shot seven minutes remaining through the five hole of Ozzie. Brett Hull was credited with an empty net goal in the final minute. On Hull's goal, MacInnis took a wrist shot from the bottom of the right face off circle that struck winger Brendan Shanahan, who was sliding to cover an open net, in the face. Shanahan, bleeding from the nose and mouth, closed his hand on the puck at the edge of the crease and St. Louis was awarded a fourth goal rather than a penalty shot, since the goaltender was off the ice for an extra attacker.

Kirk Maltby's 11th goal gave the Red Wings the lead just 42 seconds into the game. But it was not enough to out muster the rival Blues. Detroit allowed four goals for the fourth time in their last six contests. They had not allowed that many in any of the previous nine. Uncharacteristic of the Red Wings and time for a break! About three weeks would be nice.

Going to the Olympics will be Steve Yzerman and Brendan Shanahan for Team Canada. For Team Sweden will be Nicklas Lidstrom. Holdout center Sergei Fedorov will be playing for Team Russia. I don't think he knows that he won't get paid for this. Of course even if he was, he may turn down the money and say that it is not about the money. We just want to know what it is about Sergei? He has stated through his agent that he will not play for the Red Wings nor the New York Islanders, the team most rumored to be acquiring his services. He is also rumored to be headed to Florida to be reunited with Bryan Murray. We will just have to wait and see after the Olympic break to know if anything will get done.
