A strong rumor this period concerns the future of Sens GM Pierre Gauthier. Current Duck GM Jack Ferreira is expected to be fired at the end of year. Ferreira has not done much with the Duck team, but some suspect it is due to the fact he has had his purse strings tied; something Gauthier is very familiar with in his role with Ottawa. Disney Co., owner of the Ducks is said to be upset with results of the team and is expected to open the vault this summer. Gauthier helped build the current Duck team and is well aware of the talent they have available. Gauthier also owns a home in Anaheim and how can he not be fed up with having to deal with player and agent concerns over the Canadian tax system and how low the Canadian dollar is? Ex-GM Randy Sexton is a frequent visitor to Sens matches but is not considered as a possible replacement; possibilities include ex-Canadians GM Serge Savard and LCS writer Dave DeRosa...okay, maybe Savard is a little stretch. Trade rumors Sens trading deadline rumors were almost non-existent. GM Gauthier seems pretty content and the one player who is in a good contractual position to be moved is Igor Kravchuk. His contract expires at the end of the season and bids are expected. GM Gauthier favors the play of Kravchuk and is not expected to move him unless the deal is sweet. Detroit is very interested in the Sens choice for the Lady Byng Trophy for the league's most gentlemanly player. Gauthier is rumored to be none too pleased with the goaltending situation - the Nosebleeders think that Curtis Joseph would look great in the Ottawa uniforms. We are not sure how he would react under constant duress of being yanked during games. Bids are unlikely to be strong for players such as frequent scratch Radek Bonk and the slumping Pat Falloon. Trivia Who recorded the Sens' first-ever two-goal performance in their modern history? Answer at the end of this column. Senators 5, Florida 3 * With the Senators leading 4-3, Rhodes received the hook in favor of Tugnutt to start the third period. Coach Martin and both goalies could not remember being part of a goaltending switch when their team was leading. * Yashin wore the captain's "C" for the third straight game. He has worn the "C" for five games this season and the Sens are 5-0. His points per game are 2 verses 0.87 when not wearing the "C". * Referee Paul Stewart was in a gift giving mood in the first period calling five minor penalties against the Panthers verse none against the Senators. Four of the Senators goals came on the power play; they had 10 attempts. Senators 4, Washington 0 * Picket lines outside the Corel Centre continued to delay entry into the parking lot for arriving fans. Striking arena staff are part of the Canadian Autoworkers' Union. * Hockey legend Gordie Howe and his wife, Colleen, dropped the ceremonial puck prior to the game. Howe was in town to participate in a Silicon Valley North charity hockey game; no validation of the rumor that he had his equipment ready to go in case either the Sens or Caps needed him. * Tugger's shutout was his third against his former teammates in two seasons. He also upped his record against the Caps to 7-1-0. * The Senators remain unbeaten when wearing their third jersey (3-0-1). Tugnutt stopped 35 shots in the game and Daniel Alfredsson netted two goals. For Alfie it was his first two-goal performance since October 17th. NY Rangers 5, Senators 4 * This game marked the 218th time in his NHL career that Wayne Gretzky had four or more points in a game. Meanwhile, Pat Falloon got an assist for the Sens...just not the same is it? * The Rangers may have won the game but lost in the injury department. Jeff Beukeboom blocked a shot in the first period, injuring his knee. In a dangerous moment, Pat LaFontaine was sent to the hospital after colliding with teammate Mike Keane. * Starting goaltender Ron Tugnutt was pulled after the second period. The Senators four-game winning streak was broken with the loss. Islanders 4, Senators 4 * Pulling goaltenders seems to be habit-forming for coach Martin. Almost halfway through the second period, after allowing his third goal against, starting goalie Rhodes was pulled in favor of Ron Tugnutt. But, the Sens mounted an amazing comeback. Down 4-0 with 13:39 to go, the Sens came back to tie. * Randy Cunneyworth, wearing the "C", returned to the lineup after being a healthy scratch for the past five games. * If Sergei Zholtok continues to play like this, Radek Bonk will never see the ice again. Vancouver 1, Senators 1 * Arturs Irbe held the Sens at bay stopping 29 shots and blanking the Sens on all nine power-play attempts. Slumping (understatement?) Pat Falloon was scratched for the second straight game. * Talk about being honest. After his fight with Donald Brashear, Denny Lambert admitted to reporters that he got his butt kicked. Anaheim 5, Senators 2 * The Senators fired 53 shots against duck goalie Mikhail Shtalenkov. Including his empty-net goal, Teemu Selanne netted a hat trick to bring his NHL leading goals total to 49. * The loss to Anaheim broke the Sens' eight-game home unbeaten streak. * Radek Bonk has not played in nine straight games. * The Sens have outshot opponents 166-88 in their last four games, but have not won one of them (0-2-2). This and That Add Damian Rhodes to the list of Sens players who dyed their hair this season. Rhodes is now a platinum blonde. Stan Neckar and Daniel Alfredsson are the other two. Injured D Janne Laukkanen and F Magnus Arvedson are both expected back for the four-point game against the 9th place Rangers. Drumroll Please - Trivia Answer Doug Smail (remember him?) notched two goals for Ottawa in their inaugural 5-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on October 8, 1992. Surprised? Heck, Ken Hammond scored in that game too!
