LES ALEXANDER OFFERS $82.5 MILLION FOR OILERS

It's a sad, sad, day. The Oilers may be moving to Houston.

Houston Rockets owner Les Alexander on Tuesday made a $82.5 million bid to buy the NHL's Edmonton Oilers and relocate the team to Houston. If Canadian buyers don't counter with a $70 million bid within 30 days, Houston will finally be home to an NHL team. The NBA's owner bid was backed with a $5 million deposit to the Alberta Treasury Branches, the bank handling the Oilers' sale. The deposit is refundable if Canadian buyers act in 30 days.

"Les Alexander has, without hesitation, shown a consistent interest in NHL hockey, and he's shown a great tenacity in his desire to bring a NHL team to Houston,'' said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, en route to Japan. ''And we're delighted at his interest.'' Unfortunately, Bettman's delight is the worry of dedicated NHL followers.

PENS PRESIDENT RESIGNS

Pittsburgh Penguins president Donn Patton resigned Tuesday to pursue other business opportunities. Patton joined the team in November 1991 and served as president since November 1996.

RECCHI COULD REPLACE KARIYA

Anaheim Mighty Ducks star Paul Kariya is still suffering from the effects from a concussion he received on a vicious hit from Gary Suter of the Chicago Blackhawks. He will miss Team Canada's first game Friday against Belarus, and could be gone for the entire Olympics. Canada has Montreal Canadiens star Mark Recchi ready to go if Kariya can not play.

CHELIOS NAMED TEAM USA CAPTAIN

Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Chris Chelios was named captain of Team USA Tuesday at a press conference in Nagano. New York Rangers defenseman Brian Leetch, the team captain during the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, was named as assistant captain as was Phoenix Coyotes forward Keith Tkachuk.

ROY WILL START FOR TEAM CANADA

Before Team Canada's plane touched down in Japan, coach Marc Crawford decided he wouldn't leave the goaltending situation hanging in the air. In the opening moments of Canada's first news conference, Crawford said Patrick Roy is No. 1 until the flame is extinguished.

RED WINGS, KONSTANTINOV HONORED DURING WHITE HOUSE VISIT

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Vladimir Konstantinov, who is recovering from serious injuries sustained in a limousine accident six days after the team won the Stanley Cup last June, joined his teammates as they were honored at the White House. President Clinton, flanked by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman and the Stanley Cup, singled out Konstantinov, who nodded and received an emotional standing ovation from teammates and supporters. Bowman presented a souvenir replica of the Stanley Cup to Clinton, who made several ridiculous remarks throughout the ceremony that proved he has never seen a hockey game in his life. Why bother?

RED WINGS HOLDOUT FEDOROV ADDED TO RUSSIAN OLYMPIC TEAM

Detroit Red Wings holdout center Sergei Fedorov was added to the Russian team for the Olympics. He will replace injured New York Rangers winger Alexei Kovalev. Fedorov has not played this season due to a contract holdout.

NHL IMPOSES TRADE FREEZE DURING OLYMPIC BREAK

The NHL announced Thursday a trade freeze starting midnight ET Friday through Tuesday, Feb. 24 for the Winter Olympic break. Termed the "Winter Break" by the league, the NHL is taking off from Feb. 8-24 as the Olympics are contested in Nagano, Japan. The trade deadline is March 25 at 3 p.m.

CAPS' GONCHAR NAMED REPLACEMENT FOR RUSSIAN OLYMPIC TEAM

Washington Capitals defenseman Sergei Gonchar was named to replace injured New York Rangers defenseman Alexander Karpovtsev on the Russian hockey team at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Gonchar, a 6-foot-2, 210-pounder, is plus-11 in 45 games for Washington this season, contributing four goals and 11 assists. The 23-year-old will be participating in his first Olympics, after scoring two goals and adding two assists for Russia in the 1996 World Cup.

ROBERT LANG ADDED TO CZECH OLYMPIC TEAM

Due to an injury on the Czech Republic team, Pittsburgh Penguins center Robert Lang was named to the Czech Republic hockey team at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Lang, who has seven goals and five assists in 39 game for the Pens this season, was the leading scorer of the Czech team in the 1994 Olympics.

COLUMBUS EXPANSION TEAM NAMES GM

Doug MacLean, fired earlier this season as head coach of the Florida Panthers, today was hired as general manager of the Columbus Blue Jackets, an NHL expansion team that begins play in 2000.

The 43-year-old MacLean guided the Panthers to the Stanley Cup Finals in the 1995-96 season, just the Panthers' third in the league, and the team was swept in four games by the Colorado Avalanche. But he was fired November 24th after the Panthers were just 7-12-4 in their first 23 games.
