Gartner, who is two goals shy of 700, has been sidelined with a knee injury ever since Theo Fleury collided with him in early November. On Wednesday the Coyotes made a surprising move by placing the second-leading active goal scorer on waivers in order to sign free agent defenseman Michel Petit. Another team did not claim Gartner, however, probably because of a combination of his knee injury and his hefty contract. While Gartner was upset when he found out about being placed on waivers, it seems as though everything's cool in Phoenix now. Gartner might even make a return to the lineup later this week. Rumor has him playing either on Friday against the Islanders or Monday against the Rangers. Due to his injury, Gartner has played in just 13 games this season, tallying six points. Petit greets even more new teammates Michel Petit, who was signed last week by the Dogs, is used to making new friends on a new team. He's had plenty of experience at it during his 15-year NHL career. In those 15 years he's played for 10 teams. The much-traveled defenseman was signed to a one-year deal mostly due a recent rash of injuries to Coyote blueliners. Three defensemen, Murray Baron, Jason Doig and Jimmy Johnson, are currently injured, leaving little depth on the blue line. Tverdovsky signs...with the Bulldogs? Another reason the Coyotes signed Petit is due to the extended absence of free agent defenseman Oleg Tverdovsky. In order to stay in playing shape, Tverdovsky recently signed a 25-game contract with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL. Tverdovsky seems to be playing above everyone else in the league, and he's showing no signs of rust despite not playing in a real game until last week. In Tverdovsky's first game for the Bulldogs, the offensive defenseman notched a goal and an assist. A few days later Tverdovsky recorded the first hat trick of his career...not just in the minor leagues, but in any league. He said he couldn't even remember scoring two goals in a game before his hat trick for the Bulldogs. Tverdovsky also added an assist in the 6-2 win. Reports say that Tverdovsky is unwilling to sign with the Coyotes for less than $1.4 million. He and the Coyotes are apparently $200,000 apart. As for his wages in Hamilton...he's not getting any. It seems the team is responsible for the insurance premium he has in case he gets hurt, money for food, a hotel room when the team's on the road and money for gas. It's kind of like what my mom does for me. By the way...thanks Mom!
