Gartner out of action

Mike Gartner is going to have to wait a while longer to score the 700th goal of his career. Gartner sprained his knee in a collision with the Flames' Theo Fleury on Nov. 2.

Fleury and Gartner collided knee-to-knee around center ice. The hit has caused much commotion around the Coyote locker room. Keith Tkachuk was furious over the hit, calling it a cheap shot by Fleury. He also had some choice words for the Flames as a whole. He said they play "Bull****" hockey.

The Nov. 2 game was the back end of a home-and-home series between the two teams. Calgary won the first one in Cowtown, 4-2. The Coyotes won the second game on home ice, 4-2. The game was an ugly mess. There were four fights and numerous battles that were more harsh than your normal hockey scrum. All of it was due to the hit Fleury laid on Gartner.

The Coyotes are calling for revenge for the incident. Tkachuk said that if the Flames were going to take out one of his players, he would make sure his team would do the same to them the next time they meet. When is that next time, you may ask? December 23. Mark that game in your planners now. . .

Tverdovsky still out

Oleg Tverdovsky remains unsigned, and the latest reports don't look good for both sides. They are still bickering about a price, and now it looks like Tverdovsky is getting fed up with the team's negotiating tactics.

All of this comes just a few days after some of the Coyote players spoke up about the standstill, including captain Tkachuk. They were pretty clear in what they wanted: Either sign Tverdovsky and get him into the lineup, or trade him and get someone of equal talent to take his place. The players feel they are being held back due to his holdout and just want of his caliber to help the team. Getting market value for Tverdovsky this far into the season might not happen, though.

Isbister working hard

Coyote rookie Brad Isbister has been impressive so far this season in Phoenix. He hasn't lit the league on fire in the scoring department, but he's been a solid addtion to the team. He's a bruising forward who stands 6-foot-2, but he has displayed some wizard moves this season, as well.

Isbister was a fourth round draft pick of the team (then Winnipeg) in 1995. He has spent the past four seasons in juniors, playing for Portland of the Western Hockey League. After a brief late-season stay with Springfield (AHL) last season, Isbister surprisingly made the big team out of training camp this year. Keep an eye on Isbister's development throughout the season.
