Chimp Bytes General NHL News and Notes by Zippy, Wonder Chimp LES ALEXANDER WITHDRAWS PLANS TO PURCHASE OIL Houston Rockets owner Les Alexander, who was working on a deal to buy the Edmonton Oilers from Peter Pocklington and keep the team in the city for at least three years, has apparently withdrawn interest. In a one-paragraph statement, Alexander said, "The City of Edmonton is not prepared right now to embrace a change which would be necessary to structure a deal to keep the team in Edmonton. Deals of this magnitude take many twists and turns, and if in the future something can be worked out amicably so that Edmonton could have an opportunity to keep the team in the city and Houston could get an expansion team, we would still be willing to work that out." GRETZKY SETS ANOTHER RECORD With a pair of assists in a 3-3 tie with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim last week, New York Rangers center Wayne Gretzky added another record to his impressive career as his assist total surpassed hockey legend Gordie Howe's overall point total. In 1,347 games over 18 seasons with Edmonton, Los Angeles, St. Louis and New York, Gretzky has posted 866 goals and 1,851 assists. In 26 seasons with the Red Wings and Whalers, Howe tallied 801 goals and 1,049 assists. Gretzky notched his 1,850th career assist on Niklas Sundstrom's goal midway through the second period. He broke the record by feeding defenseman Ulf Samuelsson for his first goal of the season 32 seconds into the third period. SEAN BURKE ARRESTED ON ASSAULT CHARGE Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Sean Burke was released Tuesday after his arrest on Sunday for assaulting his wife in suburban Raleigh, North Carolina, authorities said. Burke was not with the team for what a Hurricanes spokesman described as "personal reasons." A spokeswoman for the Wake County (North Carolina) magistrate's office said Burke was released after court today pending a pre-trial hearing. Details of the alleged incident were not immediately available, but the magistrate's office confirmed late tonight that the alleged victim was Burke's wife, Leslie. Burke is expected to rejoin the team at practice on Tuesday morning. NHL SUSPENDS PANTHERS HEAD COACH, DOUG MACLEAN The NHL today suspended Florida Panthers coach Doug MacLean two games without pay following his actions at the conclusion of Saturday's game against the Buffalo Sabres. MacLean had a confrontation with the on-ice officials following Florida's overtime 4-3 loss. He was given a gross misconduct penalty and will miss Florida's next two games, which are at home against the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday and at Buffalo on Thursday. "Mr. MacLean's behavior in pursuing referee Dennis LaRue on the ice at the end of the game was clearly unacceptable," said NHL director of operations and senior vice president Brian Burke. "Mr. MacLean's verbal abuse as well as his attempt to get at the referee and his contact with a linesman warrants this disciplinary action." TONY GRANATO UNDERGOES SURGERY San Jose Sharks right wing Tony Granato underwent successful surgery to reconstruct a fractured jaw and plastic surgery to repair lacerations to his face after being struck by a puck in Saturday's game against the St Louis Blues. The 33-year-old Granato had four goals and three assists in 14 games this season before being injured. There is no timetable for his return. CAPITALS TO RETIRE ROD LANGWAY'S NUMBER The Washington Capitals will honor long-time defenseman Rod Langway by retiring his jersey number before the club's last home game in Landover, Maryland on November 26th. Langway, an NHL veteran from 1978-93, played 11 seasons for the Capitals and appeared in 726 games, wearing number 5. Washington acquired Langway from the Montreal Canadiens in 1982 in one of the biggest trades in franchise history. He was named team captain during the 1982-83 season and held that title for the remainder of his career. During his first season as captain, Langway led the Capitals to the playoffs for the first time in franchise history and captured the first of two consecutive Norris Trophies, awarded to the league's best defenseman. He also was named an all-star a team-record five times. Langway's number will join Yvon Labre's 7 as the only two retired in team history.
