TIES ARE BLUE

Captain Steve Yzerman netted two goals to give the Wings a 3-3 tie with their inter-division rivals, the St. Louis Blues. The hot Mathieu Dandenault also scored his second of the season. It was probably the best game the Wings played all season with both teams playing great defense and each having very good scoring opportunities.

The Wings did, however, go scoreless seven times on with the man advantage. Goalie Chris Osgood made 24 saves for Detroit, which was without the services of the injured Brendan Shanahan for a fourth consecutive game. Shanahan has a strained neck. He was due back any day.

DUCK SOUP

The Wings began their three-game mini road trip to the West Coast with a visit to the Ducks of Anaheim. The hot Mike Knuble recorded his first career two-goal game and Osgood made 21 saves as Detroit remained perfect on the road with a 4-1 victory.

Doug Brown and Marty Lapointe also scored for the Red Wings, who are 4-0 on the road this season. The Red Wings had a season-high 42 shots, including 20 in the first period in the win. The Wings dominated the entire game, never giving the Ducks the opportunity to get anything going.

CHECK MATE

Brendan Shanahan's unassisted goal snapped a third period tie and Mathieu Dandenault added a goal and an assist as the Detroit Red Wings remained unbeaten on the road with a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings in Inglewood. The Wings outplayed the Kings for the majority of the game and capitalized on their chances. They had a 32 to 24 advantage in shots. The line of Mike Knuble, Dandenault, and Dougie Brown have been getting loads of ice time and have showed that they deserve it. The have been the Wings most successful line combination the last few weeks. If you play hard and show something, coach Bowman will play you quite a bit. That's exactly what they are doing.

KILLED WHALE

Nicklas Lidstrom, Steve Yzerman, Mike Knuble, Igor Larionov and Brent Gilchrist scored for the Wings as they easily manhandled the listless Canucks in Vancouver. They managed five goals on only 21 shots but only allowed one goal on 18 shots in the win. Yzerman's tally was shorthanded. Ozzie got the win in goal.

VERNON RETURNS HOME

San Jose Shark goaltender Mike Vernon earlier in the day went to Joe Louis Arena and skated around the ice alone He skated to the crease where he stood only months ago as the Wings won the Stanley Cup. It was something he needed to do and what he wanted to do. It was his time alone as he looked up at the Stanley Cup banner that he help create. What a special time for the champion goalie.

But things were a little different after the game as the Red Wings spoiled his homecoming with a 4-3 win. Detroit's Steve Yzerman scored his 544th career goal, which tied him with Maurice Richard for 15th-place on the all-time list. The Wings outshot the Sharks 34 to 29. Darren McCarty, Larry Murphy and Dougie Brown also scored for the Red Wings in the win.

YANIC IN DETROIT

Yanic, Yanic, Yanic. Yanic Perrault netted his first hat trick on Kevin Hodson as the Wings looked pretty bad in a 5-1 loss to the L.A. Kings. The Kings took it to the Wings by scoring three unanswered third-period goals. The ghosts of Wings past must have invaded the JLA on Halloween night as nothing seemed to go their way. Slava Kozlov, who had been in a slump as of late, netted a goal for the Wings early on but it wasn't enough. The Red Wings managed 28 shots to 27 by the Kings. Spooky!

DUCK SOUP PART II

Chris Osgood was back in net as the Red Wings beat the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim 4-3 at Joe Louis Arena. The Wings were 3 for 6 on the power play and outshot the Ducks 32 to 18. The game was closer than the shot total would indicate. Ozzie came up big late in the third, stopping Teemu Selanne on a breakaway to preserve the win. The Ducks have yet to beat the Red Wings at home in their brief history.

In other news...

Injured Red Wings Sergei Mnatsakanov and Vladimir Konstatinov made a visit to the Red Wings practice. They were at the Red Wings bench watching their teammates play. The players skated by and cracked jokes and talked to their teammates.

It was a very special moment for the Red Wings to have their friends back. They are still in therapy and limited to what they can do. Vladimir still cannot speak.

On the darker side of things, holdout forward Sergei Fedorov is skating with his former team CSKA in Russia and practicing with them. He may holdout for the entire year. He is asking for $6 million per year and the Wings won't budge. If he does play one game, you can kiss his season good bye. I'm assuming that tennis must be over as his 16-year-old tennis star girlfriend wanted to go back to Russia for the winter. But that is only a rumor and not supported as of yet. But as soon as I know the truth then you will too. So I'm not speculating that it is her idea mind you, just merely stating that it might be the case. Fedorov is not speaking to reporters.

The Red Wings remain in a battle for first place with the St. Louis Blues in the Central Division and for the best overall NHL record.
