Comparison of NHL and IIHF Rules Abuse of Officials NHL: If a player deliberately strikes an official, causes an injury, or attempts to injure the minimum suspension will be 20 games. IIHF: Any action taken against an official will, at the referee's discretion, result in a misconduct, a game misconduct or a gross misconduct. Board Checking NHL When a major penalty is assessed for boarding (with injury to head and face), a game misconduct follows. IIHF: When a major penalty is assessed for roughing, elbowing or kneemg, a game misconduct follows. Butt-ending NHL An attempt to bun-end without making contact will result in a double minor, when contact is made, the penalty will be a mapr plus a game misconduct. IIHF: An attempt to bun-end without making contact will result in a double minor plus a misconduct; when contact is made, a major plus a game misconduct will be assessed, or a match penalty if injury, is caused. Charging the goalkeeper NHL For charging a goalkeeper in his crease, a minor or major will be assessed. IIHF: Any foul against a goalkeeper in his crease incurs a double minor or major penalty. Checking from Behind NHL: There is no minor for checking from behind. A crosscheck, push or charge from behind against a player who is unable to defend himself will incur a major and a game misconduct. IIHF: For checking from behind, a minor plus a misconduct, or a major plus a game misconduct, will be assessed. Crosschecking NHL Crosschecking will be penalized with a minor or a major plus a game misconduct. IIHF: Crosschecking will be penalized with a minor, or major plus a game misconduct. Calling of Penalties NHL If a delayed minor is signalled against a shorthanded team and a goal is scored, the first minor is terminated and the delayed penalty assessed. IIHF: In the same case, the delayed minor is terminated instead. Elbowing NHL: Elbowing will be penalized with a minor or major and a game misconduct if an injury, to the face or head occurs. IIHF: Elbowing will be penalized with a minor or major plus game misconduct if injury, occurs. Faceoffs NHL In a faceoff, the visiting center must place his stick down first. IIHF: In a faceoff, the attacking center must place his stick down first. Fisticuffs NHL: Any player deemed to be the instigator of an altercation will receive a minor, a major and a game misconduct. IIHF: Any player starting a fight will receive a match penalty. Goalkeeper's Penalties NHL A goalkeeper may freeze the puck anywhere in the defensive zone provided he is being checked at the time. IIHF: A goalkeeper incurs a minor penalty if he falls on the puck beyond the hash marks or behind the goal line. Goalkeeper's Stick NHL A goalkeeper's stick must have a knob of white tape at the top of the shaft. IIHF: No rule applies here. NHL No limit to the curvature of the blade of a goalkeeper's stick. IIHF: The blade of a goalkeeper's stick cannot be cunved any more than that of a regular player Icing NHL: Defending team must touch the puck to complete icing after it crosses the goal line. IIHF: Icing is called automatically when the puck crosses the goal line. Illegal Stick and Penalty Shot NHL A stick measurement may be requested during any stoppage. If a player scores on a penalty shot and then is found to have an illegal stick, the goal will be nullified. If no goal is scored, the player will receive a minor penalty. A minor penalty plus a 10-minute misconduct will be assessed to a player who refuses to surrender his stick for a measurement. IIHF: A stick measurement may be requested before a penalty shot. If the stick is found to be illegal, the player may take the shot with a legal stick and then serve a penalty. NHL If a player scores on a penalty shot, and his stick is then found to be illegaliv curved, the goal is disallowed but no penalty is given. If he does not score and his stick is then found illegal, he receives a minor penalty. IIHF: No stick measurement is allowed during a play stoppage aher any goal. If a penalty shot is missed, a measurement is allowed. Kneeing NHL Kneeing will be penalized with a match penalty for deliberate or attempted kneeing during an altercation. IIHF: Kneeing will be penalized with a minor or a major plus a game misconduct if injury occurs. Leaving the Bench NHL The first and second player on either team to leave the players bench or penalty bench to start or enter an altercation will receive game misconducts in addition to any penalties incurred by participating in the altercation. IIHF: The first player on either team to leave the players bench or penalty bench to start or enter an altercation will receive a double minor plus a game misconduct. Linesmen NHL The Linesman may stop play to call double minors for bun-ending, head-buning, high-sticking or speanng. The Linesman may also stop play and Impose any mapr penalty when a serious incident occurs. The Linesman may also report goalkeeper interference. IIHF: Linesmen have no authority in these areas. Major Penalties, Misconducts and Suspensions NHL When an injured player receives a major penalty, his team must place a substitute in the penalty box before the penalty expires. IIHF: The substitute player must enter penalty box immediately. NHL For statistical purposes, a game or gross misconduct penalty is 10 minutes long. IIHF: For statistical purposes, a game or gross misconduct penalty is 20 minutes long. NHL Automatic suspension for multiple game misconducts but not for gross misconducts. IIHF: Automatic minimum- game suspension for gross misconducts but not for multiple game misconducts, NHL When a team official is assessed a misconduct, the team does not automatically receive a bench minor. IIHF: When a team official is assessed a misconduct, the team automatically receives a hunch minor NHL For statistical purposes, a match penalty is S minutes long and there is no minimum suspension. In the event of deliberate injury, the offending player is suspended until the circumstances surrounding the infraction are reviewed by the League. IIHF: For statistical purposes, a match penalty is 25 minutes long and carries a mimmum one-game suspension. The player concerned is immediately suspended until lodgement es passed. Penalty Shots NHL The fouled player must take the penalty shot; rf he cannot, a player who was on the ice at the time of the foul must take n. IIHF: Any player may take a penalty shot. Protection of Goalkeeper NHL Play will not be stopped d an attacking player deliberately stands in the goal crease unless goaltender interference is called. IIHF: When an attacking player deliberately stands in the goal crease, play will be stopped and a faceoff held in the neubal zone. Rink Dimensions NHL Dimensions of rink: width 85 feet (26 meters); length 200 feet (61 maters). Goal lines are 11 feat (3.3 meters) from each end of the rink. IIHF: Maximum dimensions of rink: widhh 30 meters (98.5 feet); length 61 meters (200 feet). Minimum dimensions of rink: width 26 meters (85 feet); length 56 meters (184 feet). Goal lines are 4 maters (13 feat) from each end of the rink. Spearing NHL An attempt to spear without making contact will result in a double minor, when contact is made, the penalty will be a major plus a game misconduct. IIHF: An attempt to spear without making contact will result in a double minor plus a misconduct, when contact is made, a major plus a game misconduct will be assessed, or a match penalty if injury is caused. Termination of Minor Penalties NHL When a goal is scored against a team that is shorthanded by reason of one or more minor penahie, the minor penalty that caused the team to be shorthanded is nullified. IIHF. When a goal is scored against a team that is shorthanded the first minor penalty on the clock is nullified. NHL If a shorthanded team is scored upon when a delayed minor penalty is called, the player already in the penahy box (with the least amount of time remaining) returns to the ice if the penalty he was serving was a minor. The player being assessed the delayed penalty goes to the penalty box. IIHF: if a shorthanded team is scored upon when a delayed minor penalty is called, the delayed penalty is nullified. Throwing the Stick NHL For throwing a stick or any object at the puck in the defending zone, the Referee will award a penalty shot if a goal does not follow the infraction. If the offense occurs in any zone, a minor penahy will be assessed, unless a goal follows If a stick or object is thrown when the defending team s goalkeeper has been removed for an extra skater, a goal shall be awarded unless the play results in a goal. IIHF: In the same situation, a major penalty is assessed. Time-Outs NHL Only one team is permitted a time-out dunng a stoppage. IIHF: Both teams are permitted a time-out during a stoppage, but the second team calling a time-out must notify the referee before the first time-out has expired. |
