I think this is the reason the Western landscape is littered with "underachieving" teams and the reason that no west coast team has ever been able to win a Stanley Cup.

11-01-96 LCS: Hey Look, We Can Read!
LCS so kindly gave me this space to talk about my two favorite things--chicken and doughnuts. No, wait, that's not right. Books and hockey. Well, specifically, books about hockey. This edition: "A Day in the Life of the NHL".

10-31-96 Opinions, Wonderment, and Other Assorted Chin Scratchers
The season is just underway, it seems, as the East Coast rakes its leaves and the West hopes and prays the first rain of the season doesn't slow down that morning commute. It may be early in the season, but Dan still has a few thoughts to share with you.

Another season another reason, to bust out a Player of the Week; Oh that hallowed prize, that piece of pie, for which all the players dream; They've scored some goals or stopped the show, but stats don't mean a thing; When you're kickin' it twice, with a 40 on ice, you're down with the LCS stylee.

10-25-96 Disrespect Shows in Blind-side Hits
Nasty, dirty hits seem to be more and more common this season, even among players like Messier who have been well respected for years, and don't have a history of such cheap play. After the hit by Messier, concern has swept over the players, and there's a feeling that the League has to take much firmer action.

10-23-96 Lights, Camera... Faceoff!
Once again, I'm about to argue that a hockey team is in the wrong place. No, I don't mean the Whalers (though they certainly deserve to be taken off the endangered species list and moved elsewhere). This time, I'm talking about the Los Angeles Kings.

10-20-96 Brown Brings Bite to Bulldogs
When Edmonton traded Bill Ranford to Boston last season, there was one player they really wanted in exchange, defenseman Sean Brown. The Bruins drafted Brown 21st overall in 1995 from the Belleville Bulls as a stay-at-home defenseman; but Brown also has a reputation as an enforcer, and in his final juniors season with Sarnia he demonstrated an offensive touch as well. Now developing with the Bulldogs of the AHL, it's only a matter of time before Brown appears in the NHL.

10-19-96 New Season Blues
I've held my breath all summer in anticipation of the hockey season... actually, that's a lie... I'd be dead now if it were true. On the Flyers' opening night, the pyrotechnics in the Center seemed fitting, starting the season off with a bang. Well, that explosive beginning is really turning out to be a dull pop.

10-17-96 Beaufait's Scoring Continues as Solo Act
Orlando Solar Bears center Mark Beaufait had quite a year for himself last season. He is the kind of player that gives opposing coaches nightmares as they dream of ways to defend him. Sure, game plans have been created to stop Beaufait. But none have worked so far.

10-10-96 Mightiest Whale Swims to Detroit
It's official. Brendan Shanahan is no longer a Whale. Which just goes to prove that with a little gutlessness and complaining, anything is possible. Shanahan was traded Wednesday, October 9, along with defenseman Brian Glynn to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Keith Primeau, Paul Coffey, and a 1997 first-round pick.

10-04-96 Holdouts o' Plenty
The NHL season is officially underway. But, just like last season, as the league gets the first few games of the 1996-97 season under its belt, it's leaving a few key players behind due to contractual disagreements.
