The Votes Are In

Oh, that crazy Versus. After I wrote yesterday that the Loch Ness Monster of cable channels would be broadcasting the NHL Awards Show starting at 7PM, you know, relying on such foolish sources as the network's own web site, Versus bailed at the last minute, pushing the Awards coverage back to 11PM because of a mixup with the CBC.

Needless to say, I didn't watch the show on principle alone. But what can you say about the NHL? It's beginning to give incompetence a bad name. It's like the Stalag 13 of professional sports. Bettman, Hogan's digging a tunnel! Wake up!

Whatever. I don't care. It's not like those shows are ever entertaining. Although, this means you, our valued readers, will be deprived of my witty observations and sarcastic comments regarding the coverage. But in case you watched the show, here are a few jokes you can write yourself at home. Just fill in the needed info.

"Good to see (name of obscure Canadian celebrity). I guess Carrot Top was booked."

"And how about the chemistry between (name of obscure Canadian celebrity) and (name of retired NHL great)? That's the kind of nervous discomfort usually reserved for public transportation in the Gaza Strip."

"I always wondered what it would be like to be deaf. And now, after hearing (name of awful Canadian rock band here), I regret ever having ears."

The awards themselves were kind of surprising. Thankfully, Sidney Crosby won the Hart Trophy, and deservingly so, since he's easily the best hockey player in the world, and maybe his winning will actually get the NHL some positive ink. I doubt it, but you never know. Crosby got 91 of a possible 143 first-place votes, meaning there are at least 52 hockey writers out there who should be beaten with shovels.

I expected the writers to recognize Crosby's greatness, but I had some serious doubts whether or not his fellow NHLers would be willing to admit a 19-year-old is better than them. But, to their credit, Crosby's peers conceded the obvious, granting Sid the prestigious Lester B. Pearson Award. While Crosby is the second-youngest to ever win the Hart, missing out on Wayne Gretzky's mark by five months, Sid the Kid is the youngest player to ever earn the Pearson. Gretzky was 21 when he won the honor in 1982.

As expected, Evgeni Malkin scored the Calder Trophy, easily outdistancing Paul Stastny and teammate Jordan Staal. Malkin garnered 120 first-place votes to Stastny's 16 and Staal's six.

And in the other lock of the night, Nicklas Lidstrom skated away with his fifth career Norris Trophy, joining Bobby Orr (8), Doug Harvey (7), and Ray Bourque (5) in the exclusive Five- Timers Club. He'll be fitted for his smoking jacket in the morning.

The rest of the awards were kind of nutty. Martin Brodeur won the Vezina, edging Roberto Luongo 122-116. Brodeur's worthy, but it seems odd he'd win over Luongo when the Vancouver netminder finished second for the Hart Trophy and was also up for the Pearson. It's even stranger considering one fearless scribe picked Luongo third on his ballot, placing Niklas Backstrom second. It wouldn't have mattered in the end, since another second-place vote would have only given Luongo 118 points, but I think it illustrates the kind of people involved. Their wallets are seldom cluttered with Mensa cards.

Pavel Datsyuk scored a minor upset in winning his second straight Lady Byng, taking 35 first- place votes in beating Martin St. Louis and Joe Sakic. I figured Sakic would get it simply because his remarkable season in Colorado deserved some sort of recognition, but it's just the Lady Byng, so who really cares?

Alain Vigneault won the Jack Adams, beating last year's winner Lindy Ruff and Pittsburgh's Michel Therrien. Of the three, Vigneault was clearly the best choice, he changed the entire culture in Vancouver and healed a fractured dressing room. A lot of people are going to be outraged Therrien didn't win, since the turnaround in Pittsburgh was astounding, but I've said it repeatedly over the past few months, the Penguins won in spite of Therrien not because of him. The Birds were all Crosby and Marc-Andre Fleury.

The biggest travesty of the night was Rod Brind'Amour winning his second straight Selke Trophy at the expense of Samuel Pahlsson. Brind'Amour's great and all, but Pahlsson's the best defensive forward in hockey, and he proved it in both the regular season and playoffs. Pahlsson had the most first-place votes with 24, but he lost the overall tally 420-405. While it's disappointing, the loss guarantees Pahlsson will win next season, since most hockey writers are a year behind the truth.

In other awards, Saku Koivu won the King Clancy for humanitarianism, while Phil Kessel got the Masterton for dedication to the sport. Kessel, who survived testicular cancer, finished only slightly ahead of Phoenix Coyotes fans.

The First-Team All-Stars were Sidney Crosby, Dany Heatley, Alexander Ovechkin, Nicklas Lidstrom, Scott Niedermayer, and Martin Brodeur. When was the last time the First-Team Left Winger was a minus-19?

But if you need more evidence that professional hockey writers are idiots, Heatley, who was voted the First-Team Right Wing, also received 24 first-place votes on left wing. That could explain how Ovechkin ended up with the gig.

The Second-Team All-Stars are Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis, Tomas Vanek, Chris Pronger, Dan Boyle, and Roberto Luongo.

VOTING MONKEYSHINE
Luongo getting a third-place Vezina vote and Heatley drawing tallies at left wing were just a few of the voting shenanigans. It's always fun to look through the final numbers and spot personal agendas and one-man revolutions.

For instance, Paul Kariya received one third-place Hart Trophy vote. Gee, I wonder if that writer is from Nashville? But it's always wonderful when 24-goal, 76-point seasons get noticed. I think far too many of us take mediocrity for granted.

Sergei Gonchar got one first-place vote for the Norris. Now that's a bold statement. Who knew Gonchar's mom was part of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association?

Tom Preissing finished 15th in Norris voting, pulling in one third-place vote, three fourth-place votes, and one fifth-place vote. Nice to see the Make-A-Wish foundation is still going strong.

Alexei Zhitnik got one fifth-place Norris vote. Even Robin Williams doesn't think that's funny.

In a swell protest, Claude Julien, who was fired before the end of the season, finished 11th for the Jack Adams, getting a total of seven votes, including one first-place nod. Take that, Lou Lamoriello. Now who's the meathead? Fight the power!

But the best was saved for the Selke, where Patrick Marleau got one first-place vote and two third-place votes. Ron Wilson was not amused. Other bizarre Selke vote recipients were Jaromir Jagr, Mark Parrish, Alexander Radulov, and Chris Simon. Not everybody can do comedy.

Here are the complete voting totals for all the various awards and All-Star squads...
